The Hub - Star Wars: Smugglers Gambit

Star Wars: Smugglers Gambit is a new Fortnite island developed internally by Disney Games and Digital Entertainment.
-
I worked as the primary environment artist for Smugglers Gambit from the beginning of the project, doing most of the modeling for custom assets across the game. I owned the Hub area, starting from blockout until final polish. I received beautiful concepts from Stephen Zavala, then modeled, UV'd, textured, polished, optimized, and set dressed everything in the Hub, except for the Protocol 7 shop (made by Daphne Fiato) and set dressing adjustments in the lower area by Martin Teichmann. Some props are from the Star Wars Fortnite asset library. Building the island in UEFN to work for every platform gave us a lot of performance constraints, and with the Hub having so much custom work, we had to optimize heavily so it would run well and look great on everything from the highest end to PC to the lowest spec mobile and Switch 1 devices.

The Hub is the area where players spawn into the game, get to interact with Hondo Ohnaka and other quest givers, choose their class, mission, and get rewards tied to the Smuggler's Run ride in the Disney parks. A huge thank you to Stephen Zavala from ILM / Lucasfilm for his amazing concepts and concept models! Thank you to Brian Beppu for making the final materials and doing polish on some architecture assets, Jobye Karmaker for making the epic Imperial Tower in the vista, Daphne Fiato for the tv screens and eligibility device, and thanks to my art lead Martin Teichmann, as well as my art director Ken Morse. Special thanks to the immense contributions from everyone in Design, Concept Art, VFX, Character Art, Animation, Engineering, Sound, and Production Teams. This project is a result of the huge team effort and collaboration across our entire Disney Games and Digital Entertainment teams.
